The owners of Hazelwood, Australia’s dirtiest power station, have announced that it will close in March 2017 – and the federal government has been missing in action.
The Turnbull government has no credible plan to fight climate change and is leaving the urgent task of shifting to clean energy in the hands of foreign companies.
This leaves communities to deal with the cost of a declining coal industry on their own, without any certainty and without support to create sustainable alternative economic activity.
A responsible government would have a plan to phase out polluting coal power stations and to support affected communities. Doing nothing, or waiting for the market to decide, is a cop-out.
