GEG focuses predominantly on the East Gippsland region and its purpose is to:
- Promote conservation values and environmental understanding
- Raise awareness of the Gippsland environment and the threats it faces
- Promote environmental, social and economic sustainability
- Make representation to the appropriate levels of government regarding local environmental issues
- Carry out research and work which is relevant to the above
- Network with other individuals and groups having similar objectives and values
