Give us back our $5.5 billion
The Federal Government has just abandoned their promise to close our dirtiest coal-fired power stations like Hazelwood.
They claimed that the power station owners wanted too much money – that their asset value was still high despite the carbon price. So why is the government also handing over $5.5 billion in compensation to these same companies for loss of asset value?
Take action now. Sign this petition to call on the government to withdraw the $5.5 billion compensation to big polluters and allow the carbon price to do its job.

Give us back our $5.5 billion
We have precious little time to clean up our emissions from coal fired power. I want Australia to be the leader in renewable energy technology. It's the way of the future, the only way. PLEASE DO THE ONLY RIGHT THING, AND NOW: Close down brown coal, and assist renewables.

COMPENSATION TO COAL
I think many people, as shown below, don't think further than their emotions. I get passionate too, but have learned to control it. We have a 'minority Gov't". We have an aggressive Opposition which is not at all flexible. We have allowed coal to dominate for far too long, but you can't rush in and close the power source of a Country (as dirty and polluting as it is) without damage to society. So compensation was proposed to ease the coal industry out. World financial problems have changed that. Yes the Gov't has to find some way, but we must realise how difficult it is. LNP would be disastrous, at least Labor is trying to address the catastrophic effects of the 'change in our climate'. The Greens too need to be more flexible and assist rather than opppose. To oppose, leads to stalemate or regression. We should all support a Gov't which is trying to lead us safely into this Century, and let the Opposition know that they MUST lift their 'game' and help rather than hinder. It looks as though Malcolm Turnbull can at least see this.
Our future is at stake
It is very sad that there is no one in this government who is serious about a clean energy future for this country and can think further than the next election and his/her retirement plan.

Failed negotiations to close coal fired power
Dear Prime Minister, Minister for Climate Change and Minister for Energy and Resources,
I am extremely disappointed to hear that the Government has walked away form negotiations to close coal fired power stations totalling up to 2000MW.
It's always been ridiculous to give the companies compensation - and now we have the proof that it is too comfortable for them to keep on spewing CO2 into the atmosphere.
This decade is the critical decade for action on climate change - you have acknowledged this - yet you are prepared to walk away from finding a solution to this necessary first step.
Our children and grandchildren deserve better.
Sincerely
Carol Ride
Deeply regretting voting
Deeply regretting voting Labour. Watching how you fix this mess. We dont want our beautiful state turning an open hole like other states are becoming.
