When you have kids your energy bill can go through the roof

Which is why our Future Powered Families project is helping parents on low incomes save energy

Having a kid can be expensive, and it’s not just all the things you buy for them. With the amount of heating, cooling, washing and bathing going up, so can energy bills. A lot. And then they get older and the bills keep going up! Environment Victoria’s Future Powered Families project worked with low-income families, including lots of migrant and refugee families, to help them save energy, and along the way save money too.
From 2013 to 2015 we ran workshops for over a thousand parents, plus training hundreds of parents in how to be energy advisors. Our trainees then went into thousands of homes to look at their energy use then sit around the kitchen table to chat kids, energy, and how the household could save a whole lot of money. And because our community projects focus on behaviour change, participants are likely to keep saving money, year after year.

Who funded the project? Who are the project partners?
Future Powered Families is funded by the Department of Industry and Science as part of the Low Income Energy Efficiency Program. The project has many partners: ecoMaster, Swinburne University, The Smith Family, Volunteering Western Victoria, Yarra, Darebin, Brimbank, Latrobe, Hume and Hindmarsh councils. We also collaborate with councils in the areas we're working in.
