How to get ready for a green baby

As a new parent you want a healthy, safe environment for your children to grow up in. At the same time, the pitter patter of little feet can lead you to super-size your ecological footprint.

Most Victorian families find there’s a huge spike in their energy use when the new family member arrives. You’re likely to be using the heater more, boiling lots of water, and running the washing machine ragged, getting another car…

The good news is that there are many simple things you can do to help our environment that will also make life more comfortable for you and your baby. And if electricity and gas prices continue to rise, you can limit the money you spend on energy bills – and that’s a big deal when you have another mouth to feed!

Congratulations, and good luck!

We've been working with families across Victoria

From 2013 to 2015 we worked with 30 local councils across Victoria to help first time parents on low-incomes cut their energy bills through energy-saving workshops.

As well as working with low‐income new parents in general, the project, called Future Powered Families, had a particular focus on parents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and Indigenous parents.
