Ask your MP to take real action on climate-wrecking gas

With the Federal Environment Minister set to approve the catastrophic extension of Woodside’s North West Shelf gas project, the Victorian Government’s plan to get us off the gas merry-go-round is more important than ever. 

From droughts in Victoria and South Australia, to floods on the mid north coast of New South Wales, to the bleaching of Ningaloo reef in Western Australia, to record heat waves in Central Australia, every corner of Australia is reeling from the climate crisis.  

The recently approved LNG import terminal planned for Geelong will only make our gas bills even higher and expose us to future price shocks from the international gas market. Shipping in gas from other states or from overseas for Victorian homes, when modern electric appliances can do the job better, makes no sense. 

I’m pleased to see the strengthening of the Victorian Energy Upgrade scheme and the launch of the SEC’s one-stop-shop, to make it easier and even more cost-effective for households to make the switch. 

As my local representative,  I’m asking you to progress new Building Electrification regulations that would see Victorians replace old gas heaters and water heaters with modern electric ones when they break down, and to provide support to make sure renters, those in social housing, with low incomes and also small businesses, can benefit from making the switch.  

Reducing gas demand by helping households repower their homes with all-electric appliances will lower household bills and pave the way for our state to get off polluting, costly gas.
