Hazelwood, Australia’s dirtiest power station, closed in March 2017. But the decision wasn’t made by the government, it was made in a company boardroom.
As the world moves away from coal because of global warming, power stations will keep closing. But will it happen fast enough for our climate? And will communities be supported through this transition or will they be left in the lurch?
The Turnbull government has no credible plan to fight global warming and is leaving the urgent task of shifting to clean energy in the hands of foreign companies. This is bad for communities and bad for our climate.
A responsible government would have a plan to phase out polluting coal power stations and support affected communities. Doing nothing, or waiting for the market to decide, is a cop-out.
