Loddon River

The Loddon River’s journey begins in Victoria’s Great Dividing Range not far from Trentham. It flows 392 km north through the townships of Newstead, Bridgewater, Serpentine, Boort and Kerang, before joining the Murray River between Barham and Swan Hill.

Loddon River

  • The Loddon is north-central Victoria’s largest river and home to many threatened species.
  • The Loddon’s Kerang Wetlands is a haven for migratory water birds and have international conservation listing under the Ramsar Convention.
  • Sadly, the Loddon has struggled in recent years as dams, over-extraction of water, drought and climate change have taken their toll. The river has been completely dry for long periods of time.
  • In the face of these challenges, the local community is embracing change and working hard to restore their river and maintain their prosperity.

People who love and depend on the Loddon River have many memories and insights to share – of the river in flood, of the marvelous flora and fauna, and of the peace and tranquility the river provides.
