Let’s turn this report, and the frustration we’re feeling right now, into a massive moment to pressure all our federal MPs to take meaningful action and commit to strong 2030 targets.
Whether that’s telling Coalition MPs to end their strategy of spin, denial and delay, or asking your local Labor MP to back stronger 2030 targets. It’s important that they hear from YOU. They need to know that people in their local area care deeply and want them to act.
With a federal election either late this year or early next year, we need all sides of politics committed to the action we need.
1 – Decide what you’re going to say.
- The core message of the IPCC report is that it’s what we do NOW that matters most. Be clear that our 2030 target of a 26-28% cut in emissions is extremely inadequate. Leading states and countries, like US, UK and Victoria, are aiming for much stronger cuts of around 50% by 2030; but we also know that we need to go further, with evidence suggesting cuts of 75% of 2030 would be safer and give us a better chance of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees.
- You don’t need to be an expert armed with all the tiny details. The most important thing is your story and your values – that’s more powerful than any report. So tell your local MP why you care so deeply, and why you want them to take urgent action. If you’d feel comfortable having more of the details then this resource from the Climate Council is a great source of information on the report.
- This is a very emotional issue, and rightly so. Use that. But remember to always be polite and respectful.
