A new interactive website will be launched to today in a bid by environment groups to shut down Victoria's coal industry.

The 'Coal Watch' website is based on a US site which helped build an anti-coal movement.

The website will feature a map of mining licences throughout the state and information on new and existing projects.

Environment Victoria's campaigns director, Mark Wakeham, says it will reveal the coal industry's expansionary plans.

"People in Gippsland would be well aware of a proposed power station at Morwell to be built by HRL," he said.

"What they probably don't know is that there's also a very large mineral lease held by HRL and a large mine could be developed to fuel that power station."
