Environment Victoria has accused a Latrobe Valley power generator of making outrageous claims about a carbon price.

The lobby group has launched a new website which claims International Power Hazelwood is among several companies resisting moves to cut carbon emissions.

Environment Victoria spokesman Mark Wakeham says many companies are exaggerating the impact of a price on carbon in a bid for more compensation.

He says government assistance to coal-fired generators should be tied to emissions reductions.

"What we've [seen] is that in many cases these companies are highly polluting, they're also highly profitable but they've made no disclosures to their shareholders that they will be affected financially by the introduction of a price on carbon," he said.
