Tenants are being encouraged to make no-cost or low-cost changes to improve the sustainability of their rental properties.

Environment Victoria released an updated version of its Green Renters' Guide to coincide with World Environment Day last Tuesday.

Environment Victoria's Alice Sainsbury said many people thought being more sustainable meant making expensive or permanent changes to their property.

"Too often sustainability tips are aimed at home owners," she said. "But more than 20 per cent of Victorian homes are rented and we don't want people to miss out on energy and water-savings inside their homes."

Ms Sainsbury said such things as ensuring fridge seals worked properly and draught-proofing with door snakes or rugs were easy to do.

The renters guide is free at environmentvictoria.org.au/rentersguide.
