Media alert: Premier shows leadership on Murray River

Tuesday, 31 July 2012

Environment Victoria is meeting with South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill in Melbourne today. Premier Weatherill is visiting Victoria to promote his ‘Fight for the Murray’ campaign to return more water to the stressed rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Environment Victoria CEO Kelly O’Shanassy said today

‘Premier Weatherill is showing real leadership in calling for more water for the Murray – he is the only state Premier who is admitting to the dire state that the river is in because we have been taking too much water out of it for too long.”

‘The health of the Murray is critical for all states – upstream and downstream- and we all have to take responsibility for looking after it. Environment Victoria is calling on all State Premiers to support a strong Basin Plan that will return enough water to rivers to  safeguard their  future in times of drought and the future of the communities that depend on them’.
