The Surf Coast council is planning to install solar panels on all its buildings to save power.

The council has adopted a climate change policy for the next four years.

The plan includes exploring ways to capture and store carbon on council land and working with community groups to increase food security.

Mayor Libby Coker says there is no deadline for when the panels should be installed but it is a good policy.

"I think if we take it step by step we can really make a difference in terms of having solar on all our roofs in the shire," she said.

"We do have a large number of buildings in the shire and obviously if we do put solar on all the buildings we can actually start to reduce the level of energy that we use."
