Following pressure from Environment Victoria and others, the government announced a judicial inquiry into the disaster in March 2014. Our submission to the inquiry in May 2014 made national headlines by demonstrating the failure of the government regulator to enforce any kind of appropriate fire prevention measures on the mine operator.
We participated in the Inquiry with a team of barristers, briefed by our lawyers at Environmental Justice Australia. Our cross-examination of both Government and mine representatives yielded important information on the inadequacy of mine regulation and the need for accelerated mine rehabilitation.
