Environment Victoria welcomes Victoria’s new emissions reduction target and Climate Change Framework

The fact that our new target may be weaker than the original target highlights the delays and damage caused by the lack of bipartisanship on climate change.

Environment Victoria today welcomed Victoria’s new emissions reduction target and Climate Change Framework.

CEO Mark Wakeham said:

“Reestablishing a 2020 target is a welcome and necessary step. Victoria had a 20% emissions reduction target by 2010 until it was scrapped by the Baillieu government. The fact that our new target may be weaker than the original target highlights the delays and damage caused by the lack of bipartisanship on climate change.

Achieving the target, particularly at its higher end, will require pollution limits on coal fired generators so that they are not increasing pollution as Hazelwood closes, as well as an ambitious energy efficiency strategy to complement Victoria’s renewable energy target.”
