Response to EnergyAustralia joining Hazelwood worker redeployment scheme

Environment Victoria Campaigns Manager Dr Nicholas Aberle said today:

“It’s fantastic news that all the Latrobe Valley’s power stations have now committed to employing ex-Hazelwood workers. Younger power station workers in the Latrobe Valley can retain a job while older workers can take a retirement package regardless of which power station currently employs them.

“Congratulations to the Andrews government, the unions, each of the power station owners and the federal government for ensuring this breakthrough scheme could go ahead.

“State and federal governments should replicate this model in a national plan to retire Australia’s remaining coal-burning power stations and ensure support for affected workers and communities.

“Today’s announcement shows that when all stakeholders come together and are committed to a positive result, we can overcome any challenges presented by the inevitable transition to renewable energy.”
