This backgrounder provides information about the state government’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
The Andrews government set a target of reaching zero net emissions by 2050 under the Climate Change Act 2017. Now they have until 31 March 2020 to set interim emission targets for 2025 and 2030.
These targets are crucial to Victoria meeting its climate and clean energy commitments aiming to limit global temperature increase well below 2 degrees Celsius and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.
To inform their decision about the interim targets, the government has received advice from an independent expert panel headed up by former federal Climate Change Minister Greg Combet.
