Pushing large volumes of water down the Goulburn River during summer has been damaging riverbanks and killing young native fish before they can reach maturity.
Working with boating, fishing and local environment groups, we helped secure limits on these unseasonally high flows down the Goulburn River. The Victorian government’s new rules require base flows averaging 1100 megalitres per day – lower than the damaging flows seen in recent years, but still not as low as the scientific advice.
Environment Victoria is now calling for the flows to be set at under 1000 megalitres per day in future years.
