The push for a cleaner, fairer Victoria is building momentum! Check out some of the highlights from our Electrification Week of Action.
Last year, the Victorian government promised a plan to phase out the sale of polluting gas space heaters and hot water units. It’s a big deal, as it puts Victoria one step closer towards a healthy, gas-free future. Essentially, it means that once these appliances break or reach the end of their life, Victorians would need to replace them with a better, more efficient electric alternative.
We’ve been eagerly waiting to see the details. Meanwhile, the gas industry has been fighting hard to stop it going ahead. They know electrification will put a dent in their profits so they’ve been ramping up advertising and sneaky paid news articles to muddy the waters.
We decided to kick off a week of action, from December 2-8, to make sure the Victorian government heard our message loud and clear: Victorians want bold action to phase out old gas appliances and electrify for a cleaner future.
Together, we hand delivered electrification information to local MPs, put up yard signs and shared images on social media. And last week, we got good news! The Victorian government has now released their draft plan, including a practical package of reforms to get Victorian households off gas including phasing out gas heaters and hot water.
