Environment Victoria and Victorian Trades Hall Council are launching the Renew Australia for All campaign in the Eastern suburbs in Ashwood this weekend.

The Renew Australia for All campaign brings together unions, environment groups, faith groups and local community groups to campaign for government support to reduce household energy bills.

Over the coming weeks, local people across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs will be meeting with neighbours and residents, calling on their federal MPs – and all candidates – to support a huge government investment in household energy upgrades, to save on their power bills.

An efficient household with solar panels can save households up to $3,039 a year, according to data from Springmount Advisory.

There will be a postcard and placard blitz across the eastern suburbs, with the grassroots campaign calling on government to take immediate action to help local residents with:

  • A $5bn investment to eliminate upfront costs of home energy upgrades, and rooftop solar and batteries for millions of Australian households hit hardest by the cost-of-living crisis
  • A guarantee that all Australians – including those in low-income homes, renters and communities experiencing disadvantage – can access and benefit from energy savings.

Environment Victoria local campaign organiser Peizhi Jiang, who is a renter in Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs, said:

“Communities in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs are having huge issues with soaring energy bills. We know making sure all households can access efficient electric upgrades, powered by solar is the solution, and we have no time to waste.

“For too long, disadvantaged communities like renters and low-income earners are left behind in household energy transition. That’s why we are here to advocate for a just transition that provides targeted support for those most in need,” he said.

Sawsan Alfayadh, Campaign Manager of Renew Australia for All, said:

“Renew Australia for All and its 65+ partner organizations have been sitting down with communities across cities, suburbs, and regions. We’ve listened to people’s challenges, hopes, and ideas for creating a fairer, more sustainable, and secure future for everyone.

“We’ve heard stories of people making tough choices—deciding between buying groceries or keeping their homes warm in winter and cool in summer. We know that four million Australians are already slashing their energy bills thanks to solar access.

“Now, we’re calling on the Federal Government to ensure that all Australians—regardless of income, homeownership status, or whether they live in an apartment—can share in the benefits from efficient electric and solar homes,” she said.
