Thirty community members from across Australia will meet with Senators and Members of Parliament in Canberra today to urge continued action on climate change as the Clean Energy Bills enter the Senate.
The community members will kick off the day by celebrating the completion of a Say Yes Earth Relay across Victoria and NSW and meeting with members of the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee, including Senator Christine Milne, and Tony Windsor MP.
Mark Wakeham, Campaigns Director, Environment Victoria said “In the past month the Say Yes Earth Relay has been hosted by over 40 regional towns, suburbs and communities across Australia who support the price on carbon pollution and see it as a first crucial step towards a safe climate for our grandchildren. These communities have rejected the negativity of those running fear campaigns and embraced the bigger picture of reducing pollution becoming part of the booming clean energy economy.”
Don Henry, Executive Director, Australian Conservation Foundation said “As part of a day of advocacy, community delegates aim to meet with 50 to 70 MPs and staff to urge Senators to pass the clean energy legislation and all MPs to make sure climate change remains high on the Government’s agenda in 2012.”
Pepe Clarke, CEO, Nature Conservation Council of NSW said “Like the passage of the Olympic flame to the site of the Olympic Games, communities across Victoria and NSW have passed a human sized earth globe from suburb to suburb and town to town to send their message of support for putting a price on pollution to Canberra.”
The Victorian Say Yes Earth Relay, coordinated by Environment Victoria, passed through Geelong, Ballerat, Bendigo, Bacchus Marsh, Melbourne, Fitzroy, Kielor, Werribee, Brunswick, St Kilda, Canterbury, Ringwood, Nunawading, Boronia, Dandenong Ranges, Morwell, Sale, Wonthaggi, Newhaven, Inverloch, Kilcunda, San Remo and more.
The NSW Earth Relay, coordinated by the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, passed through Bondi Beach, The Entrance, Broulee Beach, Wallaga Lake, Wagga Wagga, Echo Point, Parramatta, Bungonia Gorge, Manly, Palm Beach, Ryde, Northbridge, Hornsby, Newcastle’s Nobbys Headland, the Sydney Opera House and more.
