RECYCLING is the new black, judging by a fun-filled fashion show at AMES Footscray on Friday.
The show was put together by the AMES youth class as part of a Home Planet initiative to teach newly arrived migrants about sustainability.
It featured clothes loaned by Salvation Army and Green Collect stores in Footscray and Yarraville as well as clothing loaned by teachers who shop at secondhand stores.
The Home Planet project connects participants with the environment through field trips, camping and projects like the fashion show.
Participants then design and deliver their own community environment projects.
"The fashion show is about clothes, but the students are using it to get across a broader message," program manager Katerina Gaita said.
