“We strongly welcome the Victorian Liberal Nationals announcement today that they oppose AGL’s damaging gas proposal for Westernport Bay,” said Environment Victoria CEO Jono La Nauze.
“This announcement shows the state Opposition is in touch with the concerns of the local Westernport Bay community, which is unanimous in their opposition to this project.”
“The Victorian Liberal Nationals have now joined a chorus of diverse groups against AGL’s project including three local councils, fishing businesses, the tourism industry, conservation groups, the Traditional Owners and local federal MP Greg Hunt.”
“A recent inquiry into the Crib Point gas terminal revealed significant impacts for the environment, climate change, regional tourism and the local community. This project is entirely inappropriate for an internationally significant wetland and the process so far provides no confidence that AGL is capable of managing the serious risks to the community or environment.”
“We expect Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynne to listen to these concerns and reject this project when he makes his decision in coming weeks.”
“We also call on the Victorian Liberal Nationals to relay these community concerns to Federal Minister for Environment Sussan Ley, who is another key decision maker for approvals.”
Background: The Crib Point gas terminal project was recently subject to an inquiry, which reports on 22 February. Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynne then has 30 days to make a decision.
Environment Victoria has produced a media briefer covering new information revealed during the inquiry.
