Victoria’s environment and climate are under threat from a disastrous new brown coal project.

After years of progress in cutting climate pollution and setting an end date for coal-burning power, we’re now facing a potential climate disaster from a brand-new coal industry.

What’s the threat?

A group of Japanese companies plan to:

• Mine the dirtiest leftover brown coal in Victoria’s coal mines.
• Build a gasification plant in the Latrobe Valley to extract hydrogen from the coal.
• Churn out 3.8 MILLION tonnes of carbon pollution in the process.
• While the hydrogen is used in Japan, Victoria will be left with all the pollution and environmental harm.

The climate pollution from this scheme equivalent to putting more than 550,000 petrol cars back on the road each year.

At full scale, this project could mine and gasify up to 30 million tonnes of brown coal every year, which would pollute the air with harmful coal dust & mercury.

Making hydrogen from brown coal is the most polluting method possible. Worse, this project could lead to decades more coal pollution, including keep brown coal mines open for longer when they should be closed and properly rehabilitated.

Fossil fuels must stay in the ground.

The Victorian Government is considering funding this project, and they’re expected to make their decision very soon.

Coal mines in our state must be properly rehabilitated, as soon as possible, for the health and safety of the local people and environment.
• In Westernport Bay – Work with local groups to show huge public opposition to this scheme & the massive new Major Hazard Facility they’re proposing in their local wetlands.
• Across the state – Even if the Victorian Government opts not to fund this project, we must ensure that these foreign companies don’t find a backdoor to sneak this project through.
