Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC), involves building a ‘gasification plant’ to extract hydrogen from brown coal.

Using brown coal is the dirtiest, most polluting possible way to make hydrogen. In fact, it’s even more polluting than burning brown coal in a power station because 35% of the energy is lost in the gasification process!

A group of Japanese companies want to build a ‘gasification plant’ to extract hydrogen from coal and then ship it to Japan through the Port of Hastings.

If this project goes ahead, it would pollute our climate and destroy a precious Ramsar-listed wetland. We cannot let this happen.

A small-scale pilot has been completed and labelled “a success” – despite a dangerous ship fire and having to purchase supplementary hydrogen!

The next phase of this crazy project requires a new, bigger plant in the Latrobe Valley and a new, bigger liquefaction plant at the Port of Hastings.

With the trial complete, there’s now a risk that it could be scaled up into a full commercial operation.

But if the Victorian and Federal governments rule out any more funding or support, we can stop this polluting project before it starts.

your donation today will help ensure the Victorian government votes against making this project a state priority by:

  • Campaigning to stop HESC getting off the ground by ensuring opposition in parliament through supporter action and circulating media that highlights the problems with and absurdity of this project.
  • Partnering with local groups to boost advocacy, pressure the Japanese government to withdraw support, and pull the curtain back on the false greenwashing.
  • Organising a roadshow to educate the public in the areas this project will affect the most, through market stalls, community events and local protest action.

This is an important chance to stop the project in its tracks and head off a long, drawn-out battle to protect our beautiful Westernport Bay.

Thank you for your generous support.
