Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC), involves building a ‘gasification plant’ to extract hydrogen from brown coal.
Using brown coal is the dirtiest, most polluting possible way to make hydrogen. In fact, it’s even more polluting than burning brown coal in a power station because 35% of the energy is lost in the gasification process!
A group of Japanese companies want to build a ‘gasification plant’ to extract hydrogen from coal and then ship it to Japan through the Port of Hastings.
A small-scale pilot has been completed and labelled “a success” – despite a dangerous ship fire and having to purchase supplementary hydrogen!
The next phase of this crazy project requires a new, bigger plant in the Latrobe Valley and a new, bigger liquefaction plant at the Port of Hastings.
With the trial complete, there’s now a risk that it could be scaled up into a full commercial operation.
But if the Victorian and Federal governments rule out any more funding or support, we can stop this polluting project before it starts.
