Ovens River

The Ovens River’s journey begins in the Victorian Alps, through the Ovens Valley and flows past Bright, Myrtleford and Wangaratta where it joins the King River.

Ovens River

  • Vibrant red gum forests and wetlands of the heritage-listed Lower Ovens are nourished by the river’s high natural flows.
  • The Ovens River provides life for the threatened and endangered wildlife Powerful Owl and Squirrel Glider.
  • The wetlands provide perfect conditions for native fish, such as the iconic Murray Cod, and freshwater turtles to thrive.
  • Much of the catchment has been degraded by unsustainable agricultural practices, gold dredging and the invasion of pest plants and animals.

People who love and depend on the Ovens River have many memories and insights to share – it’s a playground, pantry and place of wonder.
