In December, the state government will put forward a plan to phase out polluting gas space heaters and hot water units in Victorian homes. It’s an opportunity to move us closer towards a gas-free future where all Victorians have access to cleaner energy, healthier homes and cheaper bills.
Our research shows that ditching gas and switching to reverse cycle split systems for heating can save Victorians two-thirds on their energy bills, while also cutting climate pollution.
But the gas industry are gearing up scare tactics and public campaigns to fight these changes. They know that clean electrification will put a dent in their profits. That’s why we need to come together and push for a strong and fair plan that supports all Victorians to repower with clean, electric appliances.
Pledge to tell government you want repowered victorian homes
Why your voice matters
Before government release the plan we need to push Victorian MPs to make it as ambitious as possible.
After consultation begins, we need to drown out the powerful gas industry by showing government that Victorians want support upgrading their old gas appliances with affordable, electric alternatives.
From pledging to write a submission once the process opens, encouraging friends to get involved, or giving your local MP our resources in support of electrification, there are plenty of ways to join the fight for a clean energy future.
What’s happening?
Gas appliances are polluting our climate, spilling toxins into our homes and burning a hole in our pockets. Gas heaters and hot water units are the main culprits, accounting for 97% of the gas burned in Victorian homes. That’s why we need government support to replace them – once they reach the end of their life – with clean, affordable electric appliances.
But the gas lobby knows this policy is a threat to their sky-high profits and will fight it tooth and nail. That’s why we need to drown out the gas lobby with LOUD and CLEAR SUPPORT for ambitious policies to repower Victorian homes.
