Commissioned research showing how Yallourn could be replaced by 2023

In December 2019 we commissioned research from energy analysts Reputex to show how Yallourn, Victoria’s oldest and most polluting coal power station, could be replaced as soon as 2023.

Victoria’s coal burning power stations need to be phased out by 2030 at the latest, and the report found that immediate investment in renewable energy generation and battery storage would reduce wholesale prices faster than current trends, and help avoid a price spike at the moment of closure, like those seen when Hazelwood power station closed in 2017.
