Share your summer river story

If you’re spending time at Murray-Darling rivers this summer, can you take a few minutes to give back? Share your river story on social media – and help show decision-makers what’s at stake.

Sign up for simple instructions and a reminder SMS below.

Personal stories cut through. They remind politicians that rivers aren’t just infrastructure or policy problems – they’re living places that shape our lives.

How to share your river story

Follow these four simple steps:

  1. Post a photo or short video of you at the river on social media
  2. Share a few lines about what this river means to you
  3. Tag Environment Victoria, Minister Murray Watt and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese (this part is important! See below for social media handles)
  4. Use the hashtag #RiverStories so we can track your post

Your story doesn’t need to be long or polished. You might like to reflect on:

  • How long have you been visiting this river?
  • How has it changed over time? (water levels, flow, wildlife, climate)
  • If you fish: what are you catching now  and what did you catch in the past?
  • Any moment that shows environmental decline, loss, or resilience

Remember to tag

Why now?

2026 could be a turning point for struggling rivers in the Murray–Darling Basin, with the long-awaited Basin Plan Review on the horizon.

Decision-makers need to hear  clearly and directly  from the people who know these rivers best. That means people like you.

Not on social media but still want to take part?

If you’re happy for us to share your story on social media on your behalf, please send your video to action@environmentvictoria.org.au
