In response to the news that Victorians will be able to access three hours of free power in the middle of the day from October 2026, Environment Victoria’s Senior Climate & Energy Advisor Dr Kat Lucas-Healey said:
“This means that households that have been locked out of solar like renters and apartment dwellers can share more of the benefits of the renewable energy boom. The more that the government does to make sure everyone can get off gas and make the most of these free three hours, the better.”
“Victoria already has the cheapest wholesale power on the east coast as we rapidly shift to renewable energy backed by storage. With gas prices set to skyrocket, this new announcement ups the savings already available from shifting to efficient electric appliances at home.”
“Victoria has become a leader in the shift to renewable energy after many years of people-powered movements demanding the transition off fossil fuels – this policy promises to share the cost savings with more Victorians.”
“With a state election taking place later this year, Liberal leader Jess Wilson needs to come clean with voters about whether her party will support the renewable energy transition underway and the cost benefits it is unlocking for all Victorians.”
“Everyone is looking for ways to cut their energy costs right now. Three free hours of electricity is a simple option that will benefit Victorians from day one.”
