In response to the release of the 2026 Gas Statement of Opportunities report this morning, Environment Victoria says the report demonstrates the necessity for Victoria to reduce our reliance on gas as an urgent priority.
Environment Victoria’s Senior Climate & Energy Advisor Dr Kat Lucas-Healey said:
“The numbers are in – Victorians homes and businesses are switching to efficient electric alternatives and leaving polluting methane gas in the past where it belongs.”
“Batteries storing renewable energy, as well as households and businesses reducing their gas demand, are doing the heavy lifting in averting shortfalls and getting us out of this mess.”
“Wars overseas can’t stop the sun shining and the wind blowing in Australia. The faster we transition to clean, renewable energy backed by storage, and leave polluting and insecure fossil fuels behind, the better off we will all be.”
“Our governments need to actually tax gas companies, and make sure everyone can lower their bills with efficient electric appliances and renewable energy. The gas giants have profited at our expense for long enough.
