State Election: Clean Energy Cuts Bills

We're hitting the streets to campaign for affordable, renewable energy this State Election.

Victoria’s state election is coming up on 28 November. Energy policy is becoming a major issue: while most people want to carry on with Victoria’s clean energy transition, the Liberal-National Coalition and One Nation want to scrap years of progress and cling to expensive coal and gas. They too claim their policies will lower power bills. But the facts don’t lie: it’s 2026, and wholesale power from wind and solar costs half as much as power from coal and gas.

Coalition and One Nation policies – which seek to halt the clean energy transition, cancel transmission lines and instead extend the life of ailing coal – would add $472 to household bills between 2027-2031. Out to 2050, these policies would cost Victoria $33 billion more for power. (Nexa Advisory Report, September 2026).

Volunteers in Box Hill on 3 October 2026

So, the movement has sprung into action to let people know: clean energy cuts bills. Across the state, volunteers from different groups have been out knocking on doors, flyering train stations and engaging people on the street to spell out why clean energy is important for our climate and our wallets. From Werribee in Melbourne’s West to Box Hill in the city’s East and regionally from Geelong to Gippsland, conversations with voters across the political spectrum are ramping up as voting day draws nearer.

Our goal? Spread the message far and wide, and persuade people who are undecided or unclear on the benefits of clean energy. This election is proving to be unlike any we’ve had before, so it’s extremely important to engage with the many voters who are still unsure how they’ll vote.

We’re finding that many people do not get the chance to discuss these issues out in the world or hear opposing points of view, and that respectful, engaging conversation can create meaningful change. Plus, it’s just fun to get outside with other volunteers!

We’ve also been collaborating beyond the climate movement with labor organisations, as we recognize that the struggle for a warm home, healthy environment, and a decent cost-of-living are deeply intertwined.

At Environment Victoria’s HQ, we’ve been busy coordinating pick-ups and shipments of our yard signs, to get the message out in every electorate. If you want an easy way to join the campaign, you can order an action kit of yard signs and flyers now to help spread the message with your communities.

With just under 50 days to go, the race to protect clean energy in Victoria is on.

There’s never been a more important time to get involved, whether it’s joining an event, putting up your own signs, or asking your MP and local candidates to back clean energy.
